Cinder Block Walls
What Are Cinder Blocks?
Many refer to cinder blocks as concrete blocks, but there is a difference between the two building materials. Concrete blocks are made from Portland cement and aggregates where as cinder blocks are still made from Portland cement but with no aggregates. Instead cinder ashes are added to the mixture which is the dusty fibre ashes from coal. The combination of these materials and the hollow design makes cinder blocks much lighter in weight and much easier to work with when building cinder block retaining walls.
Light Weight Block With A Hollow Design
Although they are a light weight building block, they still have excellent strength values for all types of retaining wall systems. The standard quality of cinder blocks are often used for small retaining walls, but when a tall wall is required to contain large amounts of soil behind the wall system, they do require an addition of cement mixture. For added wall strength and stability, the hollow chambers of cinder blocks can be filled with poured in cement. For even stronger retaining wall applications, an iron rebar is placed vertically in the hollow chamber and then filled with cement mixture.
Cinder Block Wall Applications For Residential
There are a wide variety of cinder blocks that range in several block shapes, designs, sizes and block textures that can be used for residential, commercial and community retaining wall applications. The construction use of cinder blocks can be used for various residential applications for indoor and outdoor wall application which include the following:
A retaining wall construction built from cinder blocks has excellent functional strength because they are produced from a cement based mixture with cinder ashes which provides wall stability for soil containment on sloped landscaped environments. In terms of their decorative appeal they will transform the overall look of your home and landscape setting to look stylish and elegant.

With the benefit and advantage factors of using cinder blocks as the building material for wall applications and wall constructions; here are some of the more common reasons as to why many home owners and builders opt for this type of building block:
