Cinder Block Walls

What Are Cinder Blocks?

Concrete blocks are made from Portland cement and aggregates where as cinder blocks are still made from Portland cement but with no aggregates. Instead cinder ashes are added to the mixture which is the dusty fibre ashes from coal. The combination of these materials and the hollow design makes cinder blocks much lighter in weight and much easier to work with when building cinder block retaining walls.

Cinder Wall BlocksAlthough they are a light weight building block, they still have excellent strength values for all types of retaining wall systems. The standard quality of cinder blocks are often used for small retaining walls, but when a tall wall is required to contain large amounts of soil behind the wall system, they do require an addition of cement mixture. For added wall strength and stability, the hollow chambers of cinder blocks can be filled with poured in cement. For even stronger retaining wall applications, an iron rebar is placed vertically in the hollow chamber and then filled with cement mixture.
